In the early 14th century, a court nutritionist called Hu Sihui wrote his Yinshan Zhengyao, a dietary and nutritional manual for the Chinese Mongol Empire. Hu Sihui, a man apparently with a Turkic linguistic background, included recipes, descriptions of food items, and dietary medical lore including selections from ancient texts, and thus reveals to us the full extent of an amazing cross-cultural dietary; here recipes can be found from as far as Arabia, Iran, India and elsewhere, next to those of course from Mongolia and China. Most often remembered as the composer of "Gradus ad Parnassus" and more occasionally remembered as the first successful touring piano virtuoso, Clementi currently ranks somewhat higher than Dittersdorf but somewhat lower than Hummel in the great composers of the late classical -- early Romantic pantheon and his sonatas along with his symphonies and chamber music are all but forgotten by all but scholars of the period.But as Demidenko demonstrates in these 1994 recordings, these four sonatas by Clementi are indubitably great music. It's not just that Demidenko is a super-virtuoso who takes the works' technical challenges as opportunities to display his prowess, although his passage work in Clementi's Allegros and Prestos is astounding. It's that Demidenko is a truly soulful musician who expresses the emotional depths of Clementi's Allegro con moto expressiones and Allegro con fuoco e con expressiones with immense intensity and enormous passion. Each of the four sonatas has its own character and Demidenko is wholly sympathetic to them all. Anyone who knows and loves the early and middle period sonatas of Beethoven will enjoy this disc, especially in Hyperion's clear, deep mid-'90s digital sound.
